Address Authorization (USPS Form 1583)
ImportantAddress authorization is not required to start using a CMRA address. The address can begin receiving mail immediately after being created.
About address authorization
USPS requires a completed Form 1583 to authorize Stable to open and scan mail for a person or business. Address authorization refers to the process of supplying the required information to complete this form. You can learn more about this form here: What is the mail authorization/USPS 1583 form?
Completing the form
The form collects information about an officer such as IDs, selfie images, and a signature. The general process to complete address authorization is:
- Create the location (Create a location)
- Submit officer information (Onboard a location - Prefill)
- Securely upload identification documents (Generate signed upload URLs for onboarding documents)
- Create a URL for signature collection (Create a location's signature packet)
- Monitor the onboarding progress via webhooks
Document upload and information collection can be supplied via the API (Onboard a location - Prefill), or it can be completed inside of an interactive form hosted by Stable. Signatures must be collected in Stable's form using one of the following methods.
- Hosted address authorization: the end user is sent an authenticated link to complete an interactive form on Stable's dashboard. The end user does not need to have a Stable user account. You may optionally remove Stable's branding, but the user-facing URL will point to Stable.
- Embedded address authorization: the document collection and/or signing steps can be embedded in your application, optionally with Stable's branding and chrome removed (see Embed Address Authorization (USPS 1583)).
When Stable verifies the documents and countersigns the form, you'll receive a location.onboarding.updated event to mark the address as authorized. Remember that addresses can be used before they are fully authorized. Until mail authorization is complete, Stable receives mail at the address but doesn't open or scan it.
Collected documents
The applicant must provide these documents alongside the information provided to complete USPS Form 1583.
- Primary ID (government-issued photo ID)
- Secondary ID (proof of address)
- Verification Photo (selfie)
