Address Types

Learn when to use each address type in the API.

Address types

Stable exposes two types of address:

  • Virtual address (CMRA address): a real street address used to receive routine business mail.
  • Registered Agent address: a registered agent service in a single state. Stable can act as registered agent for your business entity and receives official notices at this address.

Both address types are created via Create a location. See Location codes to understand how to create each type of location.

Differences

  • Registered Agent addresses should not be used for routine business mail.
  • Registered Agent addresses always open and scan all received mail.
  • Registered Agent addresses are linked to a single business entity.
  • Registered Agent addresses do not need to complete Address Authorization (USPS Form 1583).

Telling CMRA and registered agent locations apart

After creation, you can distinguish a CMRA location from a registered agent location by reading the type field on the returned Location object:

  • type: "cmra": a CMRA location, created via a CMRA code (e.g. SFO1).
  • type: "registeredAgent": a registered agent location, created via a state code (e.g. WY).
